Brief History

Walkley takes its name from the Old English 'Walcas Leah' — Walca's forest clearing. The Old Heavygate Inn was built in 1696 and still stands today, with two-foot thick walls. Old Walkley Hall was constructed in 1601 by William Rawson and demolished in 1926. In 1875, the art critic John Ruskin founded the St George's Museum in Walkley, intended to bring art and culture to Sheffield's working men; the collection is now at the Ruskin Gallery in the Millennium Gallery. St Mary's Church was built between 1867 and 1869 and has a 90-foot spire. Walkley Carnegie Library was funded in part by Andrew Carnegie and is now run as the Walkley Carnegie Library Group by the local community since 2014.
