Crookes takes its name from the Old Norse 'Krkor', meaning a nook or corner of land. The area was founded by the Vikings as 'Krkur' around 980 AD and recorded in the Domesday Book in 1068. A Roman road from Templeborough to Brough-on-Noe ran near the area (now Lydgate Lane). Bronze Age burial urns were found near the Bole Hills in 1887 and are now in Weston Park Museum. In 1855 Sheffield politician Thomas Asline Ward praised the 'country air' of Crookes. Crookes Social Club, established in 1926, hosted Def Leppard in 1979. Notable people from Crookes include singer Joe Cocker, Paul Carrack and Def Leppard members Joe Elliott and Rick Savage.
