Brief History

Fulwood takes its name from the Old English 'Ful Wuda', meaning a wet or marshy woodland. It was formerly part of the Anglo-Saxon estate of Earl Waltheof and later a hunting chase for the Lords of Hallamshire. Fulwood Old Chapel, built in 1729 for Unitarians, is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the area. In the 1760s, Thomas Boulsover — inventor of Sheffield plate — built the Whiteley Wood rolling mill in Fulwood and lived at Whiteley Wood Hall until his death in 1788. A conservation area centred on the old village core includes ten listed buildings, the war memorial and the Thomas Boulsover monument. Fulwood became part of Sheffield in the 1930s.
